Icons and Sacred Paintings

by Angelus Workshop

After the death and resurrection of Christ the new faith spread rapidly throughout the Roman world and the Near East. The stories of the Apostles and early witnesses who had seen and known Christ Himself were eagerly listened to by converts to the new faith. Naturally, people who had seen Christ were asked for descriptions of His appearance. People began to create and distribute paintings of Christ, His Mother, and the Saints. Over time, a number of variants of ikons (icons) of Mary and Christ were created, and artists over the centuries continued to copy an interpret these subjects in terms of their own local artistic traditions; thus the same subjects are found treated in a variety of techniques, adding to the profound richness of this tradition. We endeavour to carry on this long tradition...
